What a result for ‘Northern Lights’, Kier Northern’s team in the 9th York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge held on the River Ouse, York on Sunday 10 July.

Northern Lights managed to secure a place in the final. The team got off to a relatively slow start in the first round with a time of 1.12.73; this resulted in a team talk and they then came out fighting for the second round. With a much more co-ordinated lap, they took more than 8 seconds off their time (1.04.21) and won the race. In the third round they managed a fantastic 59.11 securing them a place in the final 8 and the second fastest lap time of the day.

What a final, the race commentator said it was ‘one of the closest finals in the history of the race’ with a photo finish for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. Northern Lights came a commendable 4th with a time of 59.33. In addition to the main prize, there were a number of others made and the Northern Lights team won the Ouse Cup for the fastest ‘civilian’ team to complete with its time of 59.11 together with a cheque for £50 for York and District Against Motor Neurone Disease, Kier Northern’s nominated charity for this event. In total, the team will raise circa £1,500; a third of this will go to the York Rotary’s nominated Charity ‘York against Cancer; the remainder to York and District Against Motor Neurone Disease.
